This cubic model is a direct competitor to the Xgimi Horizon Pro 4K. But while the latter is equipped with LEDs, Dangbei has equipped its device with a laser light source ALPD announced with a brightness of 3200 lumens!The Mars Pro 4K incorporates Texas Instruments' new 0.47 DMD chip (DLP471TPFQQ), which allows, from a native 1920×1080 resolution, all the elements of a UHD image (3840 ×2160) to be displayed separately but at such a speed that the human eye does not perceive the operation. It is designed to lower the level of input lag and Dangbeiclaims that its Gaming mode reduces the delay to 20 ms.It is first and foremost a home theater projector featuring image interpolation to reduce any judder. Its Bluetooth remote control is equipped with a gesture mouse to move through the menus of applications such as Netflix for example. The "AI Image Adjustment" selection is interesting because it corresponds to a rather effective automatic calibration mode. It will also prove to be very useful as there is no CMS or gray scale adjustment directly accessible by the user.Also important is the selection of brightness, because it directly impacts the naturalness and color rendering. Several levels, from highest to lowest, are named as follows: "highlight, standard, energy saving" and a fine mode allowing the laser to be set on a scale of 1 to 10 accessible in the "custom" mode. With this new laser projector placed as usual at 50 cm from the sound level meter I read only 32 dB in its highest operating mode and 30 dB (which is the lowest limit of my measuring device) in the economic mode. How one would like all projectors to be so discreet!For the integrated sound system, if it does not lack power for my living room of 30 m², it does not offer however the subtlety and the smoothness of the solutions Harman- Kardon present at the competitor Xgimi.Power consumption :With 3200 lumens announced, I expected to discover an ogre devouring Watts. I l is not the case. With the laser at its maximum capacity the meter shows only 142W on a 100% white test pattern. The economy mode reduces the consumption to 115W. The performance/consumption ratio of this Dangbei is unmatched for the moment. This visual defect called judder is easily discernible when MEMC (image interpolation) is disabled. With this fluidity aid available on 3 levels the situation only becomes stable from the intermediate mode, i.e. "medium" . For my part I can't imagine using the Dangbei without activating the MEMC.Input lag :With more than 164 ms of delay without activating the lag reducer, the Mars Pro 4K will put off more than one seasoned gamer. But ais the option in question is there to improve the image of the Dangbei. It allows to obtain a much more reasonable delay of 48.4 ms in 2160p60hz. This is slightly below the symbolic 50 ms mark that helps me determine whether or not a projector can be used as a picture diffuser for network gaming. Heu... it 's far from the 20 ms advanced by the manufacturer.Overscan and grey light frame of the DMD chip 0.47 :Cropping won't spoil your home theater experience because the Mars Pro 4K's video processing doesn't produce any overscan. There is no salvation for the small gray band of inactive micro-mirrors that surround the "useful" image of the Dangbei. It is measured at 3 cm wide.Colorimetry and Gamma :The Dangbei, as a laser projector, has a light source allowing a color space theoretically higher than that d' of a lamp projector. I ais if this is indeed testing the projector and not its spare tire, I nd can simply say that it does not have dynamic HDR metadata management and applies a cutoff on signals above 1000 nits. This is sufficient for most current HDR-10 encodings.Contrast and brightness :For the contrast, the figures are disappointing. Admittedly they are slightly higher than those of the Xgimi Horizon Pro but the latter is LED. With similar technology it is below those of the Xiaomi laser ALPD3.0. And no dynamic contrast device will enhance the black level. We will put this result on the account of an exacerbated brightness allowing the Dangbei to illuminate very large image bases but I would gladly trade brightness for black density. Coming back to its light output, it is phenomenal, especially when you look at the power consumption! The black cube often exceeds 3000 lumens in most configurations with the laser at its maximum.With accurate colors it is able to illuminate an image base of 3m54 in 4K HDR with a luminance of 26 fL and it goes up to 4m52 for SDR signals with 16 fL.Subjective opinionBeyond some technical shortcomings (incomplete smartTV, mediocre media player), the sinews of war when buying a projector is still the quality of the image and there for the blow the Dangbei Mars Pro 4K has some significant assets.The photos illustra nt this part are from the following combination : Vividstorm 110-inch CLR screen, Panasonic 820BD player and the Dangbeiprojector connected via HDMI.The first visual impression is that of precision combined with dynamic power during standard or economy mode the black cube delivers tons of lumens. Smoothness is also one of its strong points, but it is imperative to activate the MEMC in its medium mode to remove all traces of judder and to limit yourself to it so as not to exaggerate the movement of the image as can be seen with the high mode.Finally, the great strength of the Mars Pro 4K is the rendition of detail thanks to its DMD 0.47 chip and XPR ×4 processing. A small regret that tarnishes the results to end this chapter, the colors are less saturated than those offered by the Xgimi Horizon Pro or the Xiaomi ALPD3.0. The cause is easy to guess, it is the color space more restricted than those of competing models.ConclusionI leave this test of the Dangbei Mars Pro 4K with a mixed opinion. While the image quality is certainly good, I regret a few basic shortcomings, especially when compared to the Xiaomi ALPD3.0, such as the color space and the contrast being slightly lower. On the other hand, the 4K gain is visually there and the image is finally free of any judder thanks to the presence of image interpolation (absent on the Xiaomi). I would also like to underline the good work on colorimetry done in the factory. The user does not have to worry about tedious adjustments when using the device. For the contrast, it could be much better. I l will be possible to counter its weakness but it will be at the price of the association of the projector with a low gain canvas (Bessel or other). In the end and taking into account the context of possible performance in 2022, the Dangbei Mars Pro 4K for which I had high hopes is not the classic focal length counterpart of the DLP 0.47 ALPD ultra short throw laser projectors whose native contrast continues to fly over the current production.Despite my initial intention to give him a Gold Award Mondoprojos.fr at in view of the quality of its image, on reflection it will not finally be the case. Let's say that it is because of a lack of balance or homogeneity of performance and services. I find for example that overall the Xgimi Horizon Pro is a more balanced projector than the laser machine. In particular, it remains the best choice if you want a well-integrated smartTV experience right out of the box, quality sound and a powerful media player; the 'convenience of an all-in-one projector has become a key criterion.It is by confining itself only to the visual criterion that theDangbei would be in my opinion a better choice because in many areas of evaluation of the quality of rendering it does better than the LED projector (brightness, contrast, sharpness, colorimetry). But, this time against an opponent in its laser category such as the Xiaomi ALDP3.0, which was released a couple of years ago and limited to 1080p, we were entitled to expect better performance from the Dangbei.In the end, even with the undeniable advantages that it brings, such as the fluidity and the simulated 4K, and considering that from the point of view of image quality it has enough to satisfy its current or future owners, my final feeling does not manage to put a golden halo on this Dangbei Mars Pro 4K. It is all the more justifiable from my point of view that in the balance of the side opposing the award compared to the Xiaomithere are 600€ which weigh their weight, to which it will be advisable to add the cost of buying a technical screen (and an external bias of reading sources). Got a Mars Pro today from the most recent Lightning Deal. I put it up on my 150" 1.0 gain screen to give it a snap judgement before I send it back :) I used a Roku Ultra and an Amazon Firestick Max 4k. I'm comparing it to my Epson 5040ube and my Wemax Nova 4k ust . Lasers like this in a traditional long throw seem to be a dying breed.
Quick thoughts, this thing is bright! It fills my 150" with a bright, colorful image with no sweat. Next thing you notice is how sharp the lens is. Focus looks great for no-name model. All the picture modes look at least decent in color compared to many other projectors modes. Reviewer Gregory recommended leaving motion compensation on but to me it left everything in a muddy mess no matter the setting.
Youtube 8K color demos are of course, eye popping with sharp detailed images and rich colors. My go-to HDR scene is from Aquaman outside the bar where Mera tries to convice Aquaman to return to Atlantis. The neon sign pops and the green scales of Mera's costume are sharply detailed and the bar background is nicely shaded.
Then on to Obi-Wan. This series is a torture test for the Dangbei. Star field scenes are very grey, and the interrogation scenes in episode 4 are almost painful. In the scene where Obi-Wan rescues Leia, on my Epson 5040, he emerges from the black to strike down the two storm troopers. On the Dangbei, he emerges from a grey soup.
So, lots of positives for this low priced laser. It is so very very quiet in operation, gives off little heat, uses little energy, has very nice color and is extremely bright. But... for a videophile they would have to suffer through the mediocre blacks.
